Zakai Motley was born in Portland, Oregon, at St. Vincent Hospital on June 15, 2012, weighing 10 pounds, 14 ounces, to his parents, Katie Schultz and Countee Motley.
He grew up in a loving home with his mother, older brother Elijah, and many beloved pets along the way - especially Kingston. Zakai loved his family deeply. He was truly a mama’s boy, and the two were always together.
Zakai was an amazing person who could light up any room with his unforgettable smile and infectious personality. He was caring, goofy, funny, smart, and an absolutely remarkable young man who was on his way to doing great things in this world.
Zakai touched so many people throughout his life and was truly one of a kind. He was never afraid to be himself or to try new things. His passion for life was unmatched. Known to many as “Kai” or “Z,” he was a talented and dedicated athlete who was always eager to learn and grow. He played several sports, especially baseball and basketball, but football was his true love. Outside of sports, he loved the outdoors: camping, riding dirt bikes, and going to the beach. Over the years, he earned many nicknames, including Hillbilly Zack, The Fish God, Du’De, and probably many others.
One of Zakai’s greatest gifts was his ability to connect with others. He had many different friend groups and loved each of them with his whole heart. He was never afraid to stand up for what was right or to speak from his heart. He was surrounded by a strong and supportive village who guided and loved him through every adventure. Words cannot express how special he truly was and how much he will be missed. Thirteen years was simply not enough. There was so much left unfinished – so many “firsts” he will never get to experience. A beautiful life gone far too soon.
Zakai passed away on February 20, 2026, from sudden cardiac arrest. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Judith Motley; great-aunt Bessie Green; and his brother, Lil Ghai.
He leaves behind a large and loving family to cherish his memory: his mother, Katie Schultz; his father, Countee Motley; his brother, Elijah Motley; his niece, Nayeli Motley; sisters Na’Ryah, Sa’Niyah, and Kiara; his grandparents, Laura and Mark; his aunts and uncles, Joshua and Shelly, Marlo (2nd Mama), and Pernell; his cousins, Joshua, Monique, Yessena, Taye, and Kailia; and many other siblings, extended family members, and friends who will carry his light forward.
