Wilfred Ralph Opager was born on April 17th, 1928 in Gresham Oregon, to Edwin C. and Lydia Marie Opager. Known throughout his life as Will, he spent much of his early life in Springfield, Oregon. Active and imaginative, Will acted in school plays, played varsity football, and was distinguished as President of the Boys’ Alliance organization.
Following his formative years, Will served honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He continued his education and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy from the University of Oregon. He then worked diligently to obtain his Certificate of Public Accountancy, and worked as a CPA for many years. He spent much of his life as a landlord in the Monmouth area, owning and managing numerous properties.
Wilfred married Margaret Lenell Woth in 1950, and they raised a family of five children: Steven Opager, Mary Calkin, Rebecca Lee, Susan Winterstein, and David Opager. Wilfred and Margaret were married for 71 years, and Will was a loving husband and father. Will and Margaret were doting grandparents, and thoroughly enjoyed their 12 grandchildren.
Will was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, after converting to the church in the 1950’s. He served as a Bishop of the Monmouth Ward, and also served in other various church callings throughout his life. He was an avid golfer, and spent many happy hours on the golf course.
