Ted Rial White (88) of Jefferson, Oregon passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday February 1st, 2018. Ted was born in Tucson, Arizona to Robin A. White and Florence L. (Bixler) White on April 1st, 1929. At a young age, his family moved to Brooks, Oregon where his dad (and a partner) ran a grocery store/gas station for many years. It was there that he attended grade school and then graduated from Salem High in May of 1947. He joined the Marine Corp in December of the same year. He served during the Korean War in the 5th Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was in the Regimental Communication Section as a Wire Chief and Staff Sergeant. Ted married Joyce (Larsen) White on July 15th, 1950 in Idaho while on leave from the Marines. Ted was honorably discharged from active duty in March 1952 and joined the Salem Marine Corp Reserve when he returned home. He retired from the Marine Corp in June of 1969 as a Master/1st Sergeant E8.
After returning home, Ted became an apprentice for Salem Equipment and Supplies where he learned his craft as a machinist. He then worked at Oregon Metallurgical Corp. (Oremet), where he retired as superintendent of the machine shop in 1990 after 34 years.
He was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1960, along with his 9-year-old son Steven. He was an active member of the church and served in various callings such as Bishop of the Turner Ward and Scout Master. Ted and Joyce served an LDS mission in London, England from February 1993 to August 1994. Much of Ted’s free time was devoted to camping, fishing, building things with his hands, and anything Boy Scout related. He helped many young men as they earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Ted is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce and his son Steven (Celeste). He will also be remembered by his 9 grandchildren, Jared, Heather (Mike) Ellingson, Jennifer (Ladislao) Cibrian, Melissa (Jesse Davison), Elizabeth (Nicolas) Zuniga, Kaitlyn (Johnny) Davis, Michael, Isaac (Patricia), and Joshua along with his 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 12th at 11am, with a viewing starting at 10am at the LDS Church building located at 4550 Lone Oak Rd SE, Salem, OR 97302. Bishop Decker of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at City View Cemetery on South Commercial St. in Salem, Oregon. Arrangements made by Johnson Funeral Home.
