Jan Varney

Jan 30, 1943 — Aug 13, 2026

Silverton

Jan passed away on August 13, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born in Los Angeles and spent his childhood in California. Known for his bright mind, generous spirit, and positive outlook on life, Jan left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He served six years in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a radar technician, tasked with locating enemy submarines. Jan cherished his time in the service, and when people thanked him after noticing his Navy hat, he would simply say, “It was an honor to serve.”

Jan went on to work at IBM for more than 30 years as a Customer Engineer and management trainer. At home, his greatest joy was planning meals and cooking for his family, often experimenting with new gourmet recipes that everyone will fondly remember.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Megan Varney. He shared a loving, though far too brief, marriage with his wife, Katrina Gregory. He loved reminiscing about his childhood with his sister, Jill Ergenbright, and her husband, Rick. Jan was deeply loved by his step-children—Mark Tischer, Nichole Payne, Caitlin Tischer and Lautaro Oporto—and he took great pride in his grandchildren, Gillian Weinstein and Luca and Liliana Oporto. His dog, Beau, will miss his belly rubs and gentle pats.

Jan will be profoundly missed by his family and friends.
