In Loving Memory

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved family member and friend, David Walter Hunt, who departed this world on June 10, 1948. Dave was born June 10, 1948 in San Diego, California, and spent his early years near his hometown of Julian.

At the age of two, Dave's family moved to Oregon, where they lived in Aumsville and later Winston. It was here that he completed his high school education and began a fulfilling career with the United States Forest Service. Dave’s diverse assignments, including road maintenance, road design, and fire suppression, were a true testament to his dedication and love for the outdoors. The USFS was more than just a career for him; it was a cherished chapter of his life where he formed lasting relationships with colleagues who became like family over his extensive 20-year tenure, much of which was spent in Sweet Home.

In 1988, Dave married Liz Watson, embarking on a new adventure that took them from the Siskiyou National Forest in Grants Pass to Salem, Oregon. While parting ways with the USFS was a challenging transition, Dave embraced his next chapter with the federal government, working for the Indian Health Service across western Oregon. His engineering skills, paired with his unassuming nature and dry sense of humor, made him an invaluable asset there. He found fulfillment and honor in assisting Native Americans in securing access to potable water and effective sewer and septic systems, significantly improving their lives. Despite the challenges posed by federal bureaucracy, Dave remained dedicated to his mission.

In 1996, the family welcomed a daughter, Carlee, who brought immense joy to Dave’s life. Their days were filled with laughter, soccer games, and countless family adventures. Initially fans of the Timbers, they soon became ardent supporters of the Thorns, sharing a bond through their love of soccer.

A man of quick wit, a generous spirit, and a gentle heart, Dave's kindness touched the lives of everyone around him. He is survived by a loving family including his daughter Carlee of Salem, his sisters Linda Lee Scharpf of Camas and Wendy Crane (Dave) of Salem, his former wife Liz Hunt of Salem, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog Luna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Carmen, and his brother-in-law Ray Scharpf.

Dave has left behind a legacy of love, laughter, and compassion that will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will endure in the hearts of his family and friends, who will cherish his memory forever.
