Ann Ruth Kaehn

Ann Ruth Kaehn (née Hummer) passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 74.

Born on April 15, 1952, in Framingham, Massachusetts, Ann was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Hummer. She was raised in Lompoc, California, where she spent much of her life and built a lasting legacy through her dedication to education, family, and her community. 

A graduate of Lompoc High School and California Polytechnic State University, Ann devoted her professional life to teaching. She began her career in special education before becoming a beloved elementary school educator in the Lompoc Unified School District, where she taught at schools throughout the Lompoc Valley, including Miguelito, Los Berros, and Crestview Elementary Schools.

Her innovative approach to teaching earned recognition for excellence in education and left a lasting impact on both her students and fellow educators. Long before computers became commonplace in classrooms, Ann recognized their potential to inspire learning and helped introduce Macintosh computers into elementary schools at a time when educational technology was still in its infancy. She believed learning should be experienced, not simply memorized, transforming her classroom into a place of discovery, creativity, and curiosity. Former students often remembered the imaginative ways she brought lessons to life and the genuine enthusiasm she shared with every child who walked through her door. 

Those who knew Ann will remember her tenacity, creativity, sense of humor, and her gift for making people feel welcome. She was a vibrant person, a lifelong learner, and someone who approached life with determination, conviction, and generosity of spirit. 

Ann also cherished her role as an older sister. Eight years older than her youngest sister, Mary, she became an early role model, inviting her to stay with her in Northern California and experience life as an independent working woman. At a time when many young women followed more traditional paths, Ann demonstrated that education, career, and independence were aspirations worth pursuing. 

Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Larry Kaehn; her parents, Robert and Margaret Hummer; and her brothers, Paul and Richard. She now rejoins them in eternal rest. 

She is survived by her children, Sarah Kaehn, Eric Kaehn, and Larissa Boyd; her stepson, Loren Kaehn; her cherished grandchildren, Penelope, Arran, and Bennett Boyd; her siblings, Robert, William, and Mary; and many extended family members, dear friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by knowing her. 

Together, Ann and Larry built a life in the Lompoc Valley centered on family, meaningful work, lasting friendships, and a community they loved. They were grateful to raise their children in a place that nurtured both family and service, and they took great pride in the people their children became. Those who knew them will remember not only their contributions to the community but also the warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality they extended to everyone they met. 

More than anything, Ann will be remembered for the countless lives she touched through her teaching, her unwavering devotion to her family and faith, and her steadfast belief that every child could learn, grow, and succeed when given the opportunity. 

A graveside service will be held on August 15, 2026 at Lompoc Cemetery at 11am followed by a celebration of life at Sanford Winery at 2pm. Please RSVP at www.annruthkaehn.com
